Top 5 tips for job hunting grads!

job hunting exit sign photo1) GET GOING! Do not assume the economy is so bad you will never get a job!  Every moment or day you delay, someone else is getting the job that could have gone to YOU!

2) FIND AND READ JOB DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY!  Companies tell you exactly the qualifications they are looking for in carefully worded job descriptions under the “Careers” sections of their web sites. Do not waste time with wishful thinking. Only apply for jobs where your qualifications match.  Where the qualities sought in the job description match what you have to offer . . . THAT’S what you focus on in the cover letter and resume you e-mail in to apply for that job.

3) RESUMES NEED TO BE ACTIVE, LIVING DOCUMENTS THAT GRAB ATTENTION IN 10 SECONDS OR LESS.  That’s about how long the person on the other end will spend deciding whether to read the whole thing or dump it.

4) IN RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS, prefer ACTIVE VERBS over TITLES when describing your accomplishments.  The potential employer wants to know WHAT YOU CAN RELIABLY DO . . .not what some other entity decided to call you as you were doing “it”.  For example, if you were an “Intern” . . . paid or unpaid . . . how did you spend your time, what did you learn that you can offer a new employer.

5)  NO ONE COVER LETTER FITS ALL!  Employers want to see that you made the effort to relate directly to their firm in your cover letter.  They want to see that you did your research. This reflects your level of interest.  Also, unlike your RESUME, your COVER LETTER can show more of your personality and how what you have to offer relates directly to what they seek! So SHINE!

MURRAY PREP SPECIALIZES IN ACTIVE, EFFECTIVE, CUSTOMIZED RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS FOR CLIENTS NATIONWIDE AND OFFERS AFFORDABLE RESUME/COVER LETTER PACKAGES FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS.
